The Big Heads - Issue #8
Hello Explorer!
I have a fascination with ants, and that is the reason why you've been reading so much about ants the last while. Today I want to discuss an ant species that I've been looking for for quite some time: Pheidole crassinoda - the Thick-node House Ant.
Ants have different castes within each colony. Castes are the different types of ants you see in a colony; Queen, drones (or males), nanatics (first workers in the colony), minors (or workers) and majors (or soldiers).
The Thick-node House Ant has a special caste of ants that make them very interesting. The Super-Major or Super-Soldiers. These ants are massive in comparison to the other ants and their heads are very large and chunky!
The massive heads are filled with muscles used to operate their powerful mandibles. These Super-Soldiers are seen out of the nest very seldom and only come out to assist in defending the nest and to take down large prey items!
